Engineering projects like the Jingjiang River cutoff, Gezhou Dam, and Three Gorges have impacted runoff and sediment exchange between Dongting Lake and the Yangtze River. Chenglingji, at Dongting Lake's exit, receives significant runoff and debris as the Yangtze makes a sharp 90° turn.

Dongting Lake (Fig. 1) is located in northern Hunan Province, between 111°40′-113°10′ E and 28°30′-30°20′ N, on the south bank of the middle Yangtze River. The terrain slopes from south to north and comprises three sub-basins. Covering 262,800 km², it is China's second-largest freshwater lake with a complex water system.
A certain period of erosion is expected to occur in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River, and alterations in the source and sink status of Dongting Lake reflect changes in the Yangtze River channel erosion state and the relationship between Dongting Lake and the Yangtze River to some extent.
