BESS in Germany: Booming success with a built-in ceiling? Battery energy storage systems (BESS) are experiencing a remarkable upswing in Germany - and quite rightly so. They offer one of the key need that an energy system increasingly characterised by renewable energies needs: short term Flexibility.
By ensuring energy resilience, reliability, and sustainability, BESS aligns with Germany's vision for a carbon-neutral future and sets a benchmark for the global energy transition. Enabling Germany's Energy Transition requires an economically sustainable model to attract necessary private capital.
Although most of this proposed capacity is unlikely to reach final investment decision, the outlook for actual installations remains ambitious. If the current BESS deployment rate of 1GW of additional capacity every six months continues, Germany could exceed 12GW of installed grid-scale BESS capacity by 2030.
The Federal Network Agency (“BNetzA”) has identified a demand of around 24 GW for large-scale BESS by 2037. With only around 1.9 GW of large-scale BESS currently installed in Germany, a significant increase in expansion and investment is expected in the future. The capacity is expected to increase to around 7 GW by 2026.
Currently, 921 large-scale batteries are in operation. They have approximately 2.3 GW altogether and a storage capacity of about 3.2 GWh. In 2024, grid operators issued approximately
